Welcome to IPI, the Image Processing and Interpretation Research Group of the department TELIN of the Faculty of Engineering (FirW) at Ghent University (Universiteit Gent).

IPI counts currently around 40 researchers who are doing state of the art research in the field of digital image and video processing for a wide range of applications. The research topics cover (medical) image compression and reconstruction, satellite images, (stereo) image and video segmentation and processing, and several other related areas.

IPI works closely together with the research group Medisip of the department ELIS and the the research group VIS/Vision Systems of the faculty Engineering Sciences of the University College Ghent.

IPI is also part of the IBBT (Interdisciplinary institute for BroadBand Technology).

IPI is the leader of the valorisation consortium I-KNOW (intelligent information management) and participates in the valorisation consortium HyCT.

IPI is a member of the AUGENT association research group KIS.

Bart Goossens wins IBM Belgium Award for Computer Science 2011

On December 13 2011, our colleague dr. ir. Bart Goossens won the IBM Belgium Award for Computer Science 2011. This award is given by the Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek in Vlaanderen (FWO) and le Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS). Both representatives from the academic world and the company IBM were present at the award ceremony.

Maarten Slembrouck wins the "Barco High Tech Award 2011"

Maarten Slembrouck wins the "Barco High Tech Award 2011" with his master thesis about how to operate computers with hand gestures. Maarten graduated this year as Master of Science in Industrial Sciences (industrieel ingenieur) elektronics at the HoGent. The award was given at the Filmfestival Gent. Currently, he works there as scientific assistant.

Barco/FWO award for TELIN thesis student Kevin Anckaert

Kevin Anckaert (MSc. thesis student at TELIN-IPI-IBBT in 2010-2011) has received the BARCO/FWO award for master theses 2011 with his work entitled "joint noise reduction and demosaicing for the reconstruction of digital camera images". The award ceremony took place in Ghent on Oct. 14, 2011 during Film Festival Ghent.

Sebastian Gruenwedel won 2nd prize in the PhD forum Awards ICDSC 2011

In the last edition of the International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras (ICDSC 2011) held in August 2011 in Het Pand in Gent, Belgium, our colleague Sebastian Gruenwedel won the 2nd prize in the Best PhD forum Awards with his poster and abstract titled "Multi-view occupancy maps using a network of low resolution visual sensors".

Jan Aelterman behaalde presentatieprijs op het 11de PhD symposium van de Faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen

Op 1 december ging het 11de doctoraatssymposium door van de Faculteit Ingenieurswetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent. Daar kregen beginnende (< 2 jaar) en gevorderde (> 2 jaar) doctoraatsstudenten de kans om hun werk te presenteren aan de hand van een poster. In elke categorie (beginnend - gevorderd) was er een winnaar en 2 laureaten. Bij de gevorderden was Jan Aelterman laureaat. Daarbij werd de ingestuurde abstract die hoort bij de poster eerst beoordeeld. Daarna werden de elektronisch ingestuurde posters beoordeeld.

Barco/FWO award for TELIN thesis student Saartje De Neve

Saartje De Neve (thesis student at dept. TELIN, IR07) has received the BARCO/FWO award for master thesisses on the 9th of december 2009 with her thesis "Acquisition and display of images with a high dynamic range". The award ceremony took place in the Conference Theater of Barco in Kuurne, Belgium.

"Best poster Award" Tijana Ruzic.

Tijana Ruzic (Dept. TELIN, IR07) has received the "best poster award" on the 27th of november 2009 during the ProRISC workshop in Veldhoven, The Netherlands with her work "Efficient inference engine for Ising Markov Random Field Model" (authors : T.Ruzic, A.Pizurica, W.Philips).

Jan Aelterman won "Certificate of Merit" at RSNA - 3 December 2008

At the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) 2008, Jan Aelterman received a Certificate of Merit at the Education Exhibit for his poster, awarded by a jury of experts for interesting new developments in the field. (Ref. Aelterman et al "A 3D Denoising Algorithm for MRI Corrupted by Correlated Noise", RSNA 2008).
